Why did you change careers?

Passion and Excitement

My past roles haven’t offered the challenge I am looking for. Working with IT to troubleshoot an issue or managing WordPress websites became the exciting part of my job. I was working on side projects with my wife (visual designer) and brother (UX designer) when I discovered code; the blend of tech and design attracted me instantly. I took workshops, taught myself and started working on a creative team for more exposure to code. I embraced my passion for web development and design by making a dedicated career shift and completing General Assembly’s web development immersive program.

What is your favorite analog product?

A pencil

I draw often so the pencil is my creative outlet on a personal level. A pencil promotes an iterative process by nature. Very rarely does my first attempt end up being the final product, there are many stages between an initial exploration of a concept and a refined result. Wireframing is the beginning of the creative process for web development and I use a pencil and paper extensively in this planning phase. I have found that the more I use a pencil when planning a build, the less bugs I encounter when building out. It might seem counterintuitive, but I feel the pencil is vital to web development.

What's an interest besides coding?

Golf

I find parallel concepts in both golf and my life. Golf hones patience, persistence and concentration; I use these skills in my relationships and skill development. It can be easy to lose sight of, but the point of the game is to have fun! Golf is not intuitive for me, it has taken a lot of practice and study to understand. I enjoy the mental challenge of staying engaged even when my body and mind are drained. Golf makes we want to laugh, cry, scream, jump for joy, curse the gods and try again.
